Suntech Appropriate Technology Ltd was founded in 1993 by Laureijs and Gerda Smulders. Whilst teaching in Zimbabwe Laureijs was manufacturing solar geyers and solar cookers with his students. From there the idea was born to start a solar company.
Together with Marko Donga they started a small manufacturing company in solar geysers and cookers in Kafue. A few months later the company started designing photovoltaic systems for customers. The company slowly started growing and after a few years the company moved its offices to the capital city, Lusaka as to be closer to the public.
Today Suntech provides energy solutions to Individuals, Businesses, Embassies, Rural Health Centres, Hospitals, Non-Governmental Organizations, Government institutions etc in Zambia and surrounding countries in the form of solar energy, power back up and hybrid systems.
The 3 directors, all having a teaching back ground, recognized the need for education in renewable energy. In 2002 they, together with Esabel Donga (also with teaching back ground) founded the Pumulani Renewable Energy Centre in Shimabala, Kafue where training sessions are being conducted in the sizing, installation and maintenance of solar systems. Specialist training sessions (power back up systems, solar geyser installations, solar water pumping installations etc ) are available on request.
